Keldar is out in fox form today. He hasn't shifted into an animal shape for a while and it's nice to stretch his 'legs'. Also being in a fox form has its uses.

Like snatching up people's lunches (or purses) when no one is looking and then run off with them.

Thus they'll be looking for a fox and not a human later.

[ This voice post opens quietly, with the occasional rustle of cloth and a strangely non-rhythmic thumping occurring. Finally, there are two loud sighs in a row. ]

Stop that. [ Jane's voice. She may have been the sigher. ]

What? [ This is clearly Shirley, attempting to sound innocent. ]

You know what. Stop throwing that ball against the wall.

[ The thumping continues for a moment, until there is the sounds of a brief scuffle - a moment's heavy breathing and a triumphant giggle. ] There. Anyway, what do you think?

It's some theory. [ Shirley sounds doubtful. ]

I don't know, it makes sense. Who says that all of the people who left weren't murdered? Maybe Alec was just the first time the murderer got interrupted. Maybe he usually just buries them in the forest or something.

You don't think someone would have noticed before now? People come and leave here all the time. There would be clues.

Maybe.

[ After a moment of silence, the thumping recurs, and this time there's only a muffled, "Hey!" before the recording cuts out. ]

When; May 4th.
Canon Universe; Star Wars, original Trilogy
Participants; Open! Alec is giggling in there somewhere.

The sign on Alec's shop door says, "Closed for May Fourth".

If you're lucky, you'll see him vanish through one of the random doorways that pop up, giggling like a loon. It should be noted he's wearing clothes that, while aren't Jedi robes, definitely have a Jedi feel to them. Also, he's got a lightsaber instead of his usual longsword.

Small white notices are going up in various businesses across Burby. Hand-written neatly, they say simply:

Seeking information about an incident that occurred at - (and this is the address of Alec's business) - on 12 April. If you were in the area and saw anything at all unusual, please report to - (and this, not unexpectedly, is the address of the tiny police station where Lin holds court).

These notices are accompanied by another one, written in the same careful handwriting.

Burby Police Force is recruiting new officers. Please apply in person on Monday, 29 Apr to - well, you get the point.

Lin has been busy, no matter what any private detectives might be saying.

[ Shirley is sprawled out on the bed with several journals open all around her and piles of loose-leaf notes everywhere. She's somehow writing in all of them at once - cross-referencing indexes, updating files, transferring notes. What she's doing has a certain air of 'finishing touches', as though there is actually data to collect and inferences to make and conclusions to come to. Preliminary conclusions, at least. If that's even a thing.

Finally, she sighs with satisfaction and holds up a single sheet of paper. ]

YES! Finally! The culmination of months of staring at things until they made sense! I can actually prove, within reason, that there are multiple universes!

I should write a thing about it.

[ There's a long silence, as her triumph fades and she collapses theatrically all over the assorted papers (completely throwing them into disarray) and lets out a long whine. ]

THIS WAS NOT THE THING I WANTED TO PROVE.

Normally the shop -still unnamed - was opened early by Alec. His sleep schedule tended to be erratic at best and so he usually was up and about to open it. This is why it was unusual for the shop to be locked around eight.

Upon coming inside, it is easy to see why Alec hasn't opened up.

He's laying on the floor with his sword in his chest. There's a lot of blood on the floor as well as a broken coffee cup. Alec has a rather surprised expression on his face, clearly not expecting getting stabbed.

The detectives should be happy.

One lovely Burby morning a quiet infestation of the town starts. Tiny thumbnail sized creatures roll, fly and flicker into the town. They flash around lights and flames. They flicker around being tossed around in the breeze. They huddle in puddles, lurk in bathtubs and are found in the sink in glasses. They cling to the leaves of trees and petals of flowers. And they rumble along the earth and dirt trying to find warm places to hang out, like under rocks or inside ears.

When Keldar spots them he lets out a low groan and then tosses out the water in the pitcher of his room. The little water spirits go flying out, rolling onto the ground into a puddle. They then start lurching off to the nearest source of water.

Then one of the little amberish (earth) ones gets flicked out of his ear and goes flying after the water ones. It hits a tree, makes what might be a squeeking noise maybe a squishing noise and falls into the dirt where it starts to burrow.

That done he slams his window shut with an angry grunt.

spirit picture! )

((OCC: These are spirits from Keldar's world, hence his annoyance with them. They are, clockwise from top: Fire, air, water, earth and plant/nature. They've got the intelligence of a small kitten or puppy. Harmless beyond getting into everything like ants. Keldar's world has developed ways of keeping them out of homes and things like that. Burby, alas, has not.

Oh, and naming them is a good way to get one to stay with you for a while. Even if you call it something like "pest".))

At this point, I'm beginning to think people are trying to mess with us. It shouldn't be this hard to find an apartment in a town the size of a thimble.

Which, if there were only a few places, that would make sense, but there's surprisingly a lot. And some really weird ones. Like the snake apartment. Or the Escher one. You guys aren't all living somewhere where the walls breathe, are you? Or there's an octopus in the bathtub?

I guess what I'm saying is, I could use building recommendations.

Is there really a holiday for small men in green who enjoy drinking?

In what world is this common?

And why are they all over Burby today?

[So, there's this blonde girl standing by the street, backpack over one shoulder. Fingers curled tightly around the beat up strap, knuckles almost white from how hard she's hanging onto that bag. Her hair's tied back and her attire is nothing fascinating. Denim jacket over a dark blue plaid shirt over a white t-shirt. Jeans. Black Converse All-Stars on her feet. Physically, she doesn't look a day over 18 except around the eyes. They look old. Tired. Like they've seen too much.

And she's watching the people pass with an air of suspicion, eyes darting to and fro as she makes an obvious effort to not touch people as they go by.

But then, she's also still trying to catch their attention.]

Excuse me. Can you tell me the way to the nearest--- [Nope. Ignored. What about this person?]

Hey, I got off at the wrong bus stop. Can you tell me where--- [Ugh. Asshole. They just kept walking, shot her a funny look as they continued on.]

Dude. I'm lost. If you can point me in the direction of the n--. Wow. Okay. Fine. Sorry I wasted a second of your life.

[She'll just persist in this endeavor until someone answers her question, trying to keep her urgency in check as a scowl grows on her face.]

It's Saturday night at the local pub, and the owner is trying something new: mandatory karaoke night. Good news is, drinks are free. Bad news is, you have to sing a song to get one. Do you dare?

If I have made my calculations correctly, the new year begins in two days.

I will not be available on that day for police inquiries.

[private to Iroh]

Would you like to come over for New Year's dinner?

[action]

[ Feel free to run into Lin out and about, despite the weather. She may even seem fairly relaxed, for her. She likes celebrating the new year. She's out prepping to do so - buying groceries, considering red and gold decorations, cleaning her apartment. Perhaps having a beer in the pub. ]

[ Just one last man to talk to, this way, that way, down this alley and out into a wide street – he loved the passages one could find if they wished in New York City. They were, in a more gridlike manner, quite similar to home. While he could hardly be labelled in any form to be 'nostalgic', he did still enjoy the familiar on occasion. The taste of the air, the sound of the sights, the feel of the colours; it all came together sometimes.

What was a little odd – and he immediately noticed this – was that the wide street he stepped out into was neither A. the one he'd expected it to be; nor B. all that wide a street. A was easily enough taken care of – he knew where he was as a point of geographical certainty, so something entirely different had taken place. B found itself to be vaguely more complicated, as it meant that he had, in fact, stepped out right in front of a number of wheeled people. Sudden encounter quite taken care of, Sherlock straightened, cocking his jaw out to one side a bit as he glanced around his impossibly new surroundings. Whatever remains. Indeed. ]

Meanwhile, elsewhere . . .

[ She'd gone to get tea for them, which was normal.Normal orders for both of them. On her way back to meet Sherlock (what precisely he was doing he'd been vague on, but there was a meeting place at least), she'd taken a shortcut through an alley.

And, in the twist to events that promptly turned this entire thing very very not normal, she'd looked down to avoid tripping at the end of the alley and looked up to find herself walking out into what looked like a town that was definitely not New York. Not by any stretch of the imagination.

Her first step had been to look behind her just in case she could backtrack into the alley she'd definitely been in a moment ago, but it wasn't there anymore. Then she'd pulled out her cell phone, but there wasn't any reception. So now here she is, wandering the streets of Burby with two teas in her hand and trying to make some sense of this whole thing. ]

[ ooc: okay, so, you can run into either of them separately, or, eventually, the pair of them, as they're going to find each other at some point relatively quickly. whatever works. ]

There are two girls in the town square, pressing brightly-colored flyers into the hands of any people who happen to pass by. This is what the flyers say:

CONSULTING DETECTIVES CLUB
Burby branch

Now recruiting! No experience necessary!
Join us for an experience you won't soon forget!
Contact Shirley Holmes or Jane Watson for meeting details.

It's sort of funny how threatening that accidentally sounds. At least the girls seem friendly. Perhaps you should come say hello.

Wordlessly, hesitantly, a young girl is making her way into town. She walks slowly, gazing about her as she does, her fingers brushing and lingering on the leaves of each plant she passes by. Now and again, she looks up at the sky, watching the clouds move and shift the light. Clearly, her surroundings are deeply fascinating to her.

Her clothing is well-worn, darkened with age and abuse; an old-fashioned, plain apron dress hangs down to her calves, sitting atop a dark shirt, the sleeves not quite reaching her elbows. Her laced ankle boots are crafted of an equally weathered brown leather, and she steps gingerly over the stones as she wanders onto paths.

As enthralled as she is, when she isn't marveling at the sky or the plants - taken in by the bright and vibrant living things - she's looking eagerly around at anyone who passes her by. She is clearly looking for someone.
