It's Saturday night at the local pub, and the owner is trying something new: mandatory karaoke night. Good news is, drinks are free. Bad news is, you have to sing a song to get one. Do you dare?

"And I have medical school," she tells him. "Instead, I'm going apartment hunting. Here. Don't let anyone convince you that staircases across the ceiling are a good idea. You should ask who uses them."

No wonder she's drinking today.

"Staircases across the ceiling..." What. No, he can let that go. Possibly - or at least for now. There are more interesting things there, things that make him ask with that smile he gets when he thinks maybe he can talk about something he's intellectually interested in with someone who understands it...

"But... medical school, really? What were you studying? I mean, obviously medicine, but... you know, specifically."

He decides on the fly that starting this conversation with mention of his mom the doctor will do nothing but make him sound like a kid. He can get to that at some point after he's established his own interest and knowledge.

Jane shrugs wryly. "I hadn't gotten that far yet. I'm only two years in. I was thinking about pediatrics, though. I get along with kids. What are you going to do when you grow up?" Her tone is light, teasing. She doesn't think people will ever stop asking her that question, and she's 28.

"When I grow up?" He gives a slightly sardonic grin at that, though good-natured and playing along with the joke.

"Well, I'm actually serving in Starfleet right now, aboard the starship Enterprise... which may not mean anything to you, unless you happen to be one of the people that wound up there recently."

"You were on that spaceship? What'd you do, step through the portal before it closed again?"

"Honestly, I wish I knew." He shrugs, with mild exasperation, at that.

"If I did, I might have found a way back by now."

"You are among friends here," she says, her tone firm, and she grins at him. "We're all just as lost."

That does get a smile in return - how could it not? - and a nod along with it.

"I know-- and it's not just me I want to find a way home for, either. I couldn't leave knowing that there were others still stuck here."

"Hey, if you get the chance, you should take it," she said. "It'd suck if you were left here twice."

And that, he laughs at, slightly. Because gosh, that colloquialism.

"Yeah. That would suck. I mean, considering how I wound up here, who even knows how much of a choice I'd really have about leaving anyway?"
