It's Saturday night at the local pub, and the owner is trying something new: mandatory karaoke night. Good news is, drinks are free. Bad news is, you have to sing a song to get one. Do you dare?

"You think?" Shirley gave that kind of smile that usually meant that she liked an idea more than she wanted to admit.

"I don't think we know any of the same songs, though - unless you count that one Taylor Swift album you played on repeat for like a month."

Jane considered. "We'll have to do the one from that album, then!" she said. "Ooooh, I'll go see if they have it!"

So far they'd had all the songs she could think of to sing, and quite a few she'd never heard of. She'd suspect that the karaoke machine was magic, except the idea was so silly.

"Are you sure--" but Jane was off discovering the magic that was the karaoke machine. For her part, Shirley kind of expected that people would think they were dating if they sang that kind of song together, and up until now Jane hadn't wanted to admit that they were in that kind of relationship.

Shirley hadn't quite understood that, so she understood any change in that status even less. For once in her life she was the one standing back and looking confused - though she did also wonder if the bartender would let her claim her drink in advance.

If you asked Jane, she would say, "It's karaoke, not an engagement ring!"
