Alec is sitting outside his shop, in jeans and a tee-shirt despite the cold, with a bowl of chopped up squares of meat. At least he's not barefoot? Circling him is a small brown dragon, about the length of his arm with a snub nose and jeweled eyes. He fishes out a piece of meat from the bowl and then flicks it into the air.

The piece of meat vanishes after leaving his hands and then the little dragon does too. The meat cube reappears somewhere in the square randomly and the dragon snatching it up just seconds behind it.

It then wings its way back to Alec and trills at him, obviously saying 'again'.

Jane scratches behind a ridge which she is thinking of as an ear. She isn't that squeamish, being a med student, but she's surprised by the feeling of his skin. He's as warm as a mammal, she thinks.

"Maybe Shirley and I should get one of these," she says, grinning back at Alec.

"Anything that could fly would be more trouble than a dog," she says, scratching the creature's chin.

At Alec's other statement, she lifts an eyebrow. "So he's not from your world either, huh? Do you usually pick up souvenirs?"

"Lucky for him," she says. "Might be a good idea to be more careful with local food. That can get you into all kinds of trouble. Although I'm sure I don't need to tell you that."

The food in the army commissary is pretty much the same everywhere. But you can't stay on base forever, and that's the problem.

"How do you get a job like yours, I wonder," she says speculatively. She doesn't really want it, but sometimes she really is curious how he came to be here. "--Will he play fetch?" She's digging around in her pockets for something to throw.
