He's found an unused shop of his own and has been renovating it.

There's junk all over the place. Odds, ends, odd ends, things and whatsits, lots of books, shiny objects and everything else.

"But he wrote that book... ages ago. He's dead now. How is anyone going to retroactively slip new words into a classic novel? Do you time travel?"

Jane found herself oddly fascinated with the idea.

"Words are powerful. Words effect the world around us. They create ideas and somewhere out there the book that Hemingway wrote is real with the characters as flesh and blood as you and I are. And the words these people write can effect those worlds."

Then.

"Yes, I can travel through time but that's got nothing to do with the whole parasite thing."

"Wow," she said, considering, and then after a moment, she smiled a little. "No one better get ahold of my 'book' then. Shirley will end up going over a cliff or something and I'll have a new BFF."

There's a very brief blank look on Alec's face before he continues with, "Nah. You two would just really be lovers. Lots of sex."

Awkward.

"You really could quit doing that."

[element_wizard]

He does manage to look ashamed.

"Sorry. I forget people get weirded out by that."

[watsonyourmind]

She gives him a look. "No kidding."

This could be an awkward silence, but let's push through.

"So you have tons of stuff like this just lying around, huh? Is there a knife who does art critique?"

[element_wizard]

MOVING ON!

"Gods! No. One talking thing is enough. But I do have a pen that glows in the presence of bad art."

"I'm beginning to think that this junkshop should be called the Hall of Insults or something," she said, half-sincere.

[element_wizard]

"Considering I collect random stuff that no one wants? Possible. But if you want something nice, I have a cloak that lets you turn into a raven."

[watsonyourmind]

That sounded cool, but...

"How do you turn back?"

She's a bit skeptical.

[element_wizard]

"You wish it."

He goes over and grabs a cloak made of raven feathers. Swirling it around him, it settles around his shoulders. There's a brief moment and then the feathers fluff up and with a twisting of something Alec turns into a raven.

Jane might shriek a little in surprise. She will never get used to this magic thing. Oh god, Alec is a bird, what the hell.

Poor girl.

He fluffs up his feathers and caws hello to her before shifting back into human shape.

"See."

[watsonyourmind]

She shakes her head firmly. "Definitely the weirdest thing I've seen today. I think I'm going to pass on that..."

"Weirder than the sword?"

He hangs the cloak up.

[watsonyourmind]

"Definitely. I mean, I had a talking teddy bear when I was a kid, I've seen inanimate things talk... not answer, back, no, but... you turned into a bird."

Still a little unsure about that.

[element_wizard]

"A talking teddy bear." He sounds a bit... well not doubtful but weirded out by the idea. "That's kinda creepy."

Yes. He's creeped out by the idea of a talking teddy bear.

Jane laughed. "It wasn't like we had conversations or anything. It just had like five stock phrases. I can't believe something like that surprises you."

[element_wizard]

"I grew up on a world that isn't as technologically advanced as yours," he admits. "We have about maybe Victorian era levels, but we're not allowed to advance much further."

[watsonyourmind]

"Not allowed? I didn't think inventors usually asked permission," she answers with a shrug.

[element_wizard]

Alec gives her a mirthless smile. "The fey control my world very tightly. Anyone who starts to work with iron gets ... well they're not around much afterward."

And they're in fairy. Possibly one of the reasons why Alec is so jumpy a lot of the time.

Well, that was disturbing. "How come you get to carry around that big sword, then?"

"It's not made of iron."
