Anyone who bothers looking up at the sky today might notice a large black dragon flying overhead. Anyone who doesn't immediately run for cover might notice the fact that said dragon appears to be rather frantic and occasionally yells "Laurence! Laurence, are you here?" in a British accent. If you happen to be standing somewhere next to a large enough spot for him to land in he might attempt to come talk to you.
[ooc: Because descriptions are key with non-human book characters: He is glossy black, with bluish markings on his wingtips, and blue eyes with slitted pupils like a cat's. He has four legs with five talons each and a pair of wings with six spines each. He has a ruff around his face and tendrils that hang from his lower jaw. He is probably around 100ft long, though he is far longer than wide and tends to coil his tail around himself when sitting.]

Because there was no way he was from their world. Someone would have noticed.
So, holding Shirley's hand still, she tried to figure out the best way to explain this.
"Have you ever heard of, um, Faery? The place? That's supposedly where we are."
Worst explanation ever.

He hasn't had much opportunity to study British folklore, and they're not the sort of stories dragons tell because there aren't nearly enough battles, but one picks things up here and there.

Whatever the case, the way he was speaking - most noticeably the casual way in which he tossed around the word 'babies', but there were other hints - seemed to imply that he was very intimate with one or more humans. He seemed to regard the hypothetical idea of babies in the same way that a human would, so there was obviously some kind of close relationship with humans there, although Shirley hated to think that a being this intelligent was domesticated.
"Is it considered to be a real place, where you're from?" she asked, curious to know how far this relationship went. "Or mere folklore?"

"Mostly it's just normal people who came here by accident," she said to the dragon. "Like you did, I guess."

"Well, it was certainly not on purpose," he said, a bit huffily, beginning to be annoyed at the place itself, since there was no one else to blame. "Oh, but where are my manners? My name is Temeraire. It is very nice to meet you, even under the circumstances."
